Edinburgh Wine Bars
Sometimes you don't feel like visiting a busy pub and instead look for something a bit more unusual where you can try something new. I have compiled a list of my favourite Edinburgh wine bars, those on the list are all independently owned and run by knowledgable staff with a real passion for food and wine.
Whighams Wine Cellar
Whighams is an Edinburgh institution and has been serving fine wines to it’s residents since 1983. The space was originally a wine cellar for a Georgian townhouse, they now offer wines, and real ales alongside an impressive food menu in relaxed, traditional surroundings.
They have guest wines on rotation and some really good midweek dining offers including:
Wine Wednesdays – where they open your choice of wine from the shop and let you try before you buy, Dine Out Thursday – 2 Mains and a bottle of house wine for 35 and my favourite – Oyster Happy Hour everyday 4-6pm where all oysters are £1.50.
Spry is a neighbourhood wine bar and bottle shop, on the ground floor of a stunning Georgian townhouse that specialises in organic wines. Popular belief states that organic wine packs less of a hangover the next day… I’ll let you decide!
Wine and other drinks are available by the glass or by the bottle, and everything on the wine list can be purchased to take home with you. They have a small and ever-changing A La Carte menu plus a 5-course tasting menu which of course comes with a wine pairing.
The Green Room Wine Bar
The Green Room is a wine focused bar located in Edinburgh’s West End. They also operate as wine merchant. Their food menu consists of cold tapas, mid-size courses & platters. The wine flights on offer are reasonably priced and the staff are super knowledgeable when it comes to recommendations. There’s always a warm ambience and dogs are welcome.
Their head sommelier is available to provide the following services: – Private online Masterclasses, – Wine Tastings, – Wine consultancy for wine selection, investment and private cellars. (must be organised in advance)
Good Brothers Wine Bar
Good Brothers is a wine bar and shop in Stockbridge. It was founded in 2016 by 2 brothers – Graeme and Rory Sutherland.
They pride themselves on great food and interesting wines and staunchly believe in sourcing as much as they can locally.
When it comes to wine they have a passion for minimal intervention and sustainable practices with around half of the wine list being classified as either Organic or Biodynamic.
Smith and Gertrude
Another Stockbridge wine offering, Smith and Gertrude is a cheese and wine bar that has stood on Henderson Row since 2015.
I can’t describe their cheese and wine flights better than them:
“Flights are our way of introducing you to something different. Our flights are about showcasing wines from the wrong side of the tracks, wines that shun the limelight, wines that don’t fit into today’s neatly packaged categories. Each wine is perfectly paired with cheese.” S&G
They also offer a wine delivery service – free delivery to EH postcodes. Chilled on arrival – wonderful!
One20 Wine Café
This Dundas Street wine café is a real gem. It has a stunning minimalistic interior and a small terrace which is perfect for people watching when we have pleasant weather.
The owners have Italian Heritage which is evident in both the food and wine selection their veggie lasagne is one of my all-time favourites.
Ronnie, Kyle and team offer attentive yet informal service and it’s always a pleasure to take guests for a visit.
